Remember those tough times that sting even now? I've had my share. In 8th grade, I was slapped with a label: 'mediocre.'

It felt like a punch every time I met this teacher and every time I reached for my dreams. I was told I wouldn't make it to that university in the UK, that I wasn't cut out for big things. Inside, I was a mix of sinking doubts and a stubborn whisper: "I'll show you." 

Back then, chocolate wasn't just a treat; it was my go-to comfort. Every piece was a tiny escape from feeling like I didn't measure up, from the scary thought that maybe they were right about me. In class, I'd keep quiet, too scared to speak up and face laughter or that look that said, "See, you're not good enough."

In my role as a coach, I've met many in the life sciences field who've battled similar feelings. Smart, capable leaders who still feel like outsiders in their own story. One client, a brilliant man, remained trapped in his comfort zone, haunted by a past failure. After being called out by his boss in front of the leadership team for a project gone wrong, he shouldered the blame as if he were the sole captain of a sinking ship.
