The Cost of Overworking and Under-Strategizing: How to Prioritise Time For Yourself
Mar 24, 2023As entrepreneurs and business leaders, we often feel the need to fill our calendars with back-to-back meetings and be involved in operational matters. While this may make us feel productive in the short term, it can have a negative impact on our mental well-being and long-term success.
I speak from personal experience. I used to dedicate most of my time to operational matters, leaving only a small window for strategising and future-thinking at the beginning of each project. As a result, I found myself feeling drained and stressed, and my ability to scale up my business was limited.
It wasn't until I started to intentionally step back and carve out time for self-reflection and strategic thinking that I began to see the benefits. Taking a step back allowed me to gain perspective on my business, assess what was working and what wasn't, and make informed decisions about my next steps. It also gave me the mental space to recharge and stay focused on my goals.
I now prioritise time for myself every day and encourage the business leaders I serve to do the same. Only by stepping back and dedicating time to self-reflection and strategising, can we fully step into our power, serve our customers more effectively, and achieve our goals.
Thought-provoking questions to help you reflect on your own habits and practices.
1: How do you currently fill your day? Do you find yourself filling your calendar with back-to-back meetings and operational tasks, or do you intentionally make time for strategic thinking and self-reflection?
2: How many hours for strategy work do you set aside? Do you dedicate enough time to thinking about the bigger picture and assessing your long-term goals, or do you find yourself constantly reacting to immediate demands?
3: How much time a day do you set aside for yourself? Do you carve out time for self-care, hobbies, or other activities that bring you joy and help you recharge? Or do you find yourself constantly pushing yourself to the limit?
4: Who are you serving if you tell yourself that you can't make time for self-reflection and strategic thinking? Remember, taking care of yourself is not only important for your own well-being but also for the success of your business and the people you serve.
5: What are you currently tolerating that is a disservice to yourself and your future self? Are there any habits or practices that are holding you back from achieving your goals? What changes can you commit to making to create a better future for yourself?
These questions may be uncomfortable to consider, but taking the time to reflect on your habits and practices can help you identify areas for improvement and make positive changes in your life and business.
