Here's How to Embrace Imperfection
Apr 10, 2023The Journal for the Next Level Leaders:
As the IT Executive at Calberg Coaching, I’m always up to improve processes and serve our clients even more powerfully. The latest initiative was to record our LinkedIn audio room.
Last week, I thought I had everything under control - all the gear was active, and I was ready to go. However, as the meeting started, I realised that something was off. There was no conversation happening, and people were slowly leaving the room.
Only later did I realise my mistake - I hadn't connected the device correctly. I was frustrated with myself and wondered whether I should do another recording. But with a full agenda and a vacation coming up, I decided to take a different approach.
Instead of beating myself up for the mistake, I created a checklist.
Here's WHY —
Great leaders create the room to fail fast, learn, and rise. Sadly, most leaders are still unaware of the immense benefits that can be reaped from this approach. Don't let that be you.
Accepting our imperfections creates an environment where growth and development can flourish. We become more resilient, more adaptable, and more effective leaders.
Here are 5 empowering principles of embracing imperfection that I use daily, which I teach and train my clients to embody and which I think may resonate with you too:
Principle #1
Embrace self-awareness: Acknowledge that you are not perfect and that mistakes are a natural part of growth and learning.
Principle #2
Learn from your mistakes: Take the time to reflect on what went wrong and what you can do differently next time. Use your mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
Principle #3
Create fail fast culture: Share your mistakes and learning with your team members and encourage them to do the same. Surround yourself with supportive people who will help you to stay positive and focused on progress.
Principle #4
Focus on progress, not perfection: It's not the result that matters. It's progress. Instead of striving for an unattainable ideal, focus on making progress and learnings from your mistakes. Celebrate small wins and use them as stepping stones to create more success.
Principle #5
Lead by example: By embracing imperfection and demonstrating a willingness to learn and grow, you create an environment where others feel safe to do the same. This helps to build trust, foster innovation, and drive success.
So the next time you make a mistake, don't beat yourself up. Be curious about what you can do differently. Learn and rise fast. Celebrate your newfound insights.
Share your story and this checklist with your team and those you care about.
Unleash your infinite potential: Be unlimited.
Much Love,
Camilla
