Accelerate Your Transition: 15 Essential Tips for Success
May 08, 2023Are you currently going through a transition in your career? It can be a challenging time, but with the right mindset and tools, you can make the most of this opportunity to grow and excel. As someone who has been through the process alone and with outplacement consultants of varying qualities, I understand the importance of having a solid plan in place.
Here are 15 tips that have worked for me and could accelerate your journey:
- Leverage cutting-edge AI to enhance your CV and bio. This will free up energy and time. And that's what you need - more time and more energy. However, don't forget to double-check the results for accuracy. I use Chat GPT and Jasper in my coaching practice. Chat GPT may be what you need right now.
- Identify your unique value proposition. What specific knowledge do you have that no one else can offer? You are the only one on this planet with your unique skills. Be proud. Own it!
- Own your worth. Remember that your worth is not solely defined by your professional achievements. Personal accomplishments, such as raising a family or volunteering also contribute to your overall value.
- Believe in yourself and your worth. If you don't, how can you expect others to? During a transition that was chosen for me, I struggled with imposter syndrome and self-doubt. But with the help of mentors and coaches, I was able to build my courage, grow my confidence and communicate my strengths more effectively.
- What do you do? A question many people play backwards. Be clear about who you help and what problems you solve. For instance, you may specialise in helping pharma leaders navigate complex regulatory environments. In my case, I focus on supporting emerging leaders in the industry to develop their leadership skills and achieve their dreams. That's what I do. And coaching is one of the modalities I use.
- What impact do you create? Articulate the impact you create in specific terms. For example, you might help your internal customers reduce costs, increase revenue, or improve patient outcomes.
- Challenge the beliefs that may be holding you back. Don't fall into the trap of assuming that certain roles or industries are closed off to you. Most of what you tell yourself if a LIE.
- Use the right language. Be mindful of the language you use to describe yourself and your situation. Avoid negative self-talk and choose words that inspire and energise you. I made a conscious effort to reframe my experience and focus on the positive aspects of my career journey.
- Choose to inner circle wisely. Surround yourself with people who motivate and inspire you. Seek out mentors, colleagues, and friends who are successful and supportive. I joined a networking group for women in leadership and found invaluable guidance and encouragement from my peers.
- What do YOU want? Many people ignore this essential question. Don't rely solely on external advice when it comes to your next career move. Take the time to reflect on what truly matters to you and what kind of work will bring you fulfilment. For me, it was important to find a role that aligned with my values and allowed me to make a positive impact on the world.
- Do you need money right now? Be strategic about job offers. If you're in dire financial straits, any job may suffice, but if you have more flexibility, hold out for opportunities that align with your vision and dreams. In my transition to a full-time trusted advisor for Executives in Pharma I turned down several advisory offers on a weekly basis as they were no longer a match for what I wanted to create, who I was becoming, the impact I could create and my worth.
- Work on your mindset daily. Consider investing in personal coaching to help you overcome limiting beliefs and develop a positive, growth-oriented mindset. Alternatively, you can read books, listen to podcasts, or join a community of like-minded individuals who support your personal and professional development. The key is to consistently engage in activities that nourish your mind and soul.
- Be curious about your own energy. The way you show up and interact with people can greatly impact the outcomes of your professional and personal relationships. Therefore, it's essential to learn how to manage your energy levels and cultivate a positive, inspiring presence. You can read books, attend workshops or hire a coach to help you master the art of leadership energy. Most leadership courses skip this step. Most HR Teams are unaware of it. If they were, workplaces would be very different and we would also be surrounded by great leaders.
- Enjoy the process. Transitioning can be stressful, but it's also an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Celebrate every small win along the way and learn from your mistakes. Adopt a growth mindset and focus on the journey, not just the destination. By doing so, you'll be able to build resilience and develop a sense of gratitude for the experience.
- Your current salary is a lag indicator. It does NOT reflect your true worth or potential for future success. Don't let it limit your ambitions or hold you back in your transition journey.
