Feeling Unseen at Work? How to Break Free and Succeed

Recently, I held a 3-day live event on influence, innovation, and impact where I shared three big mistakes many of us were taught growing up that inhibit our fulfillment and earning potential. I wanted to share them with you today at a high level so you can see where you might be unconsciously limiting yourself:

1. You Cannot Be Authentic and Vulnerable as a Leader

Did your mom or someone else ever tell you, “never show weakness”? Over time, this belief can make you think that in order to have a career, you cannot be vulnerable. Does this feel true for you?

I remember my mom often told me, “never show weakness.” It made me believe that in order to have a career, I couldn’t be vulnerable. This belief held me back for a long time.

Many ambitious women fear that showing their true selves will jeopardize their careers. However, it’s the fear of losing your job that might close you off from being yourself and being present.

I can’t tell you the number of stories I’ve heard from community members who, upon embracing authenticity, built stronger relationships with upper management, gained peace of mind, and became more innovative.

Personally, I experience less stress now after immersing myself in self-education and running my own business compared to several years ago when I only focused on upgrading my academic skills.

Being authentic and vulnerable is not a weakness; it's tied to being true to yourself. It’s not about secretly talking yourself out of your potential, out of the opportunities to rise as a person, out of trusting yourself. You are much more than your job role. If you feel called to lead, it’s time to connect with how you do it today and the gaps you want to close.

Authenticity and vulnerability are strengths that lead to real connections and impactful leadership. If they were weaknesses, some of the most successful leaders and innovators in our society—those who lead with empathy and authenticity—would not be where they are today.

2. The Big Egos Control the Conversation

When I look back at my corporate gigs, two things stand out: individuals who understood that success is a team effort and those who misused their power. This contrast has always been striking to me.

It’s the stories you tell yourself that matter.

What would your responses be to any of these questions?: 

  • I  believe I'm worthy of being in the big meeting room
  • I feel worthy of making a true impact in this world
  • I feel worthy of having meaningful conversations with your boss
  • I feel worthy of working less and making more impact
  • I feel worthy of asking bold questions
  • I feel worthy of dreaming big
  • Do you see yourself as worthy of investing in your growth?

These are some of the beliefs define your level of self-worth. You can only lead to the level of your own conscious awareness and level of self-worth. Transforming any belief that holds you back, will transform both your personality and personal reality.

3. You Have 20 Years of Experience and You Know Best

I used to think this too. Despite being recruited by prestigious corporations and having significant responsibilities, I still struggled with fear, doubt, and anxiety about speaking truth to power. These fears existed long before I had a substantial impact and continued afterward. They weren’t tied to my responsibilities but to an internal stories about me not being worthy to advice high-performing leaders, having nothing to offer, it's just me from Denmark, English is not my mother tongue, and waiting to be called out as a fraud.

Here’s the reality: if you don’t level up how you think and continue to repeat the same patterns, you don’t have 20 years of experience; you have one year of experience repeated 20 times.

I examined areas of my life where I had permanently healed, such as past relationships, and questioned why standing in my power should be any different. It doesn’t have to be. Even if authenticity has been a long-time struggle, it can be healed. You can create a peaceful, supportive, and expansive relationship with yourself, all the time.
