9 Steps To Building A Dream Team – and Become More Successful
Sep 26, 2022John came 10 minutes late to our online session. He was grumpy.
The person he trusted most had resigned. Apparently headhunted to take on similar accountabilities at a smaller firm.
Adding to the grumpy mood, at a recent town hall meeting, a vocal employee had expressed his lack of trust in the leadership team. And this employee had told the crowd that he had started to look for a new job outside the company. John was angry and found the situation very disgraceful.
19 months into the CEO role and John felt he was in the desert. And very much alone.
John was demotivated. He attacked his employees for all sorts of wrongdoings. He questioned if he was the right CEO for this turn-around assignment. Forgotten were the results he had accomplished with the team.
What John had missed on his route to great leadership was building a highly successful team.
John is not alone. Many people focus on the assignment and forget to nurture the team. Team development is a highly undervalued discipline. The good news is everyone can learn it.
What to do differently.
Everyone can learn how to build dream teams. Here are 9 steps that will help you build a dream team and will take you from a good leader to a great leader.
1. Listen. Great leaders listen with the intention to understand. You want to be curious and be so consciously aware that you never judge.
2. Common goals. Great leaders set intentions. You want to be intentional as well. Define goals that support the corporate vision. Set structure and discipline so your employees work on what matters.
3. Celebrate. Great leaders take time every day to celebrate team achievements. Be proud of what you create. Create a hall of fame for fail-fast learnings.
4. Trust. Highly successful leaders create trust. This leads to higher productivity, increased creativity, and increased happiness and wealth
5. Decisive. Highly successful leaders make firm decisions. They trust themselves and don’t waver once they commit to an action.
6. Support individual growth. Great leaders empower their team members to do the impossible. Become their primary cheerleader. Cheer on every step on the growth journey.
7. Pain the big picture. Great leaders shape the future. They know the destination and are very intentional with what they do. They are disciplined and with curiosity ask, “does this support our vision?” If the answer is vague or no, the project is paused or stopped.
8. Information sharing. Share information with continuously remind people of the WHY and What. Let your employees figure out the HOW.
9. Safe workspace. Highly successful people know that a safe workspace is key when you want to build a dream team. A safe workspace leads to better collaboration, creativity, and solutions.
Time is now. If you are serious about growing your success and learning how to level up your leadership impact, you want to set your team up for success. embody these steps and make sure that you teach and train your line managers.
