Have you been involved in an ERP roll-out (restructure in disguise) where you put in a lot of effort and despite you working harder you never really experienced true satisfaction and fulfillment?

I have.

A few years back, I was in involved in an ERP-driven restructuring that challenged the company’s profit bottom line and many of its many corporate values “people first” being one of them.

The challenge

The future company structure and future ways of working were hard to accept for most. Leaders included.

People were uncomfortable. New tasks. New processes. New colleagues. New line managers. New team members. The restructuring resulted in chaos from day 1. Broken business processes. Customers received the wrong products. Financial backlog. Unhealthy workplace. Unfilled expectations. People felt lost. They couldn’t see the destination.

Being in charge of communication, I’d focused on communicating the burning platform, illustrating the new work processes, forming the new teams, helping the leaders communicate the change and more. I and the rest of the leadership team used negative language that didn't create the impact we desired. 

Little did I know about Leadership Speaking and the power thereof. And none of my peers and people in the support functions like HR, Training and Communication had received training in Leadership Speaking. It was foreign territory.

Leadership Speaking is a skill I recently acquired because I was committed to uplevel. I enrolled in private speaking training. And it shifted my perspective on WHAT to prepare before going on stage.

 

12 Keys to Better Leadership Speaking

What I did years back, leaders still do today.

Through sharing my learnings, I hope to inspire you to play along and experiment with improving your leadership speaking skills. You can only try. You can never make a mistake.

Here are 12 KEYS to a better leadership speaking experience and delivery:

  1.  What impact do you want to create?
  2. How do you want to connect with your audience?
  3. What is your opening question?
  4. Own your message in your heart space.
  5. Find 2 stories that support your message. Write these down for you to own in your heart space.
  6. Explain the stories as vividly as possible. Invite the audience in. Get them to see it and feel it. What did it mean?
  7. Use language that guides the audience to the destination. Drop language like must, have to, forced to, need to, and burning platform.
  8. Know your key messages and phrases.
  9. Slow down when you get to the sections that contain your key message.
  10. End with a clear CTA. What do you want your audience to do?  
  11. Tell your audience how much you appreciate them being present.
  12. Speak from the heart. Drop slides
